The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
