The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
